When should I arrive and how long should I stay?

The wedding is December 27. We suggest arriving by Wednesday, December 23 for pre-wedding activities, and you're welcome to stay through New Year's if you'd like. See the Events page.

Do I need a visa to enter Rwanda?

Rwanda is one of the easiest countries in Africa to enter. Many nationalities enter visa-free; others can get a visa on arrival or, for the smoothest experience, apply in advance through the official Irembo portal (irembo.gov.rw). Make sure your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date, and confirm your specific requirements 6–8 weeks before you fly.

Do I need any vaccinations?

Please note that this is a friendly heads-up and not medical advice; please rely on your doctor. A few general notes for Rwanda: Yellow fever: a vaccination certificate is required if you're arriving from (or recently transited) a country with yellow fever risk, worth checking regardless. Routine vaccines: be up to date (e.g., MMR, tetanus/Tdap). Commonly recommended: Hepatitis A and typhoid are often suggested for Rwanda. Please see a travel clinic or your doctor 4–6 weeks before travel, and check the official CDC Traveler's Health and WHO pages for Rwanda for the latest.

What to know about Malaria?

Rwanda is a malaria-risk country. Kigali sits at high altitude (~1,500 m) where risk is lower, but many doctors still recommend antimalarial medication and mosquito-bite precautions (repellent, long sleeves in the evening) especially if you'll travel outside the city (safari, Lake Kivu, Nyungwe). Talk to a travel clinic about the right option for you.

Currency & payments?

The local currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). USD is widely accepted at hotels and tourist venues, and major credit cards (Visa & Mastercard) are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. Carry some local cash for markets, taxis, and smaller spots. ATMs are available at the airport and around the city.

What languages are spoken in Rwanda?

Main language is Kinyarwanda, but English and French are widely spoken in Kigali.

What's the weather like in late December?

Mild and pleasant: daytime highs around 25°C (77°F), cooler evenings around 16°C (61°F). It's the short rainy season, so pack a light rain jacket.

How do I get around?

Ride-hailing apps (Yego, Move), metered taxis, and motos are all easy and affordable, and hotels can arrange airport pickup. For larger groups staying together, hiring a car and driver for the trip can be well worth it, reach out and we're happy to share contacts.

Anything else to know?

Plugs are Type C and J (European two-prong), 230V. Time zone is Central Africa Time (UTC+2) year-round. Tipping isn't required but is appreciated (5–10% at restaurants).
